"One of my favorite collaborators—excellent director for BOTH playwrights and actors."
- Judd Lear Silverman, playwright
"Christina completely changed how I approach characters and the way they take up space within an ensemble."
- Cristina Obando Sanchez, actor
"She is the rare director who is able to create an environment of total safety and care while allowing for true artistic freedom and risk-taking. Her desire to push the boundaries of what theatre can be makes her an indispensable asset to any creative team."
- Mike Newman, actor
"Christina Rose Ashby is a brilliant theatre mind. I have been constantly impressed by her innovation, resourcefulness, and creativity. While so much of theatre grinded to a halt during the pandemic, under her leadership, Permafrost Theatre Collective, continued to thrive. Theatre has been forced to evolve and Christina has led that charge, viewing adversity as a creative opportunity rather than as a roadblock.
- Steven Hayet, playwright
Christina Rose Ashby
Hello! I am an Alaskan raised, Brooklyn based theater director, educator, and all around theater practitioner. I began my creative journey in my home state where I trained with numerous youth theater institutions before obtaining my BA in Theater at the University of Alaska Anchorage. As a young adult in the Anchorage theater community, I learned many valuable lessons, the most important being that if I wanted to see changes in how theater was practiced, I would have to do it myself. I made a necessary switch from performing to directing and aimed to create safe spaces where everyone could achieve their best. After graduation, I directed "Dog Sees God: Confessions of Teenage Blockhead," a play that provided the community with much needed queer representation and was named a Best in Theater by the Anchorage Daily News. I continued to direct for the Alaska Theater of Youth while co-creating Alaska's first ever live sketch comedy show.

Itching to get out of Alaska, I moved to Chicago where I studied at Act One Studios. There I honed my acting and improvisational skills and had a chance to work and learn from such Chicago luminaries like Jonathan Berry, Ted Hoerl, and Stephen Cone. I was only in Chicago for one year before moving to New York City to obtain my masters in directing from the Actors Studio Drama School (ASDS.)

While at ASDS, I was able attend Inside the Actors Studio tapings with Bradley Cooper, Tina Fey, Bruce and Laura Dern, Jim Parsons, and Jake Gyllenhaal. During my third year, I took a devising workshop that completely changed how I wanted to approach theater. This workshop was the first time I was able to really implement all of the training I have had as an actor and helped me to focus the entire scope of my creativity. ASDS also allowed me to work directly with playwrights and those two processes helped set the stage for the work I do today.

Since graduation, I have worked steadily in the indie theater community in NYC as a director and producer. I have directed multiple world premieres and have participated in countless theater festivals, including the Days of the Dead Festival, Midtown International Theater Festival, The Secret Theater One Act Festival, and New York Fringe. Being a big believer in continuing education, I have studied with Third Rail Productions, Wonderspark Puppetry, and the Ume Group. I have also developed a teaching artist practice where I can foster my love of play and discovery in the next generation. Most recently, I have worked with the Meisner program at NYU Tisch School for the Arts and the acclaimed Interlochen Arts Camp.

In 2019, I started Permafrost Theatre Collective, a new works incubator that champions early career playwrights and connects artists from across disciplines. We had a successful run of an original devised show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and helped keep artists working through the pandemic. We currently run a well-received staged reading series and offer multiple networking opportunities.
